I will like to begin by congratulating the governor of Imo State: Rochas
okorocha, for turning 50 years of age
recently. His birthday is actually september 26 which also coincides with the
10th anniversary of his foundation but for reasons best known to the governor,
he decided to shift the birthday celebration to October 8 2012.
The most amazing thing is that the day he chose,, a Monday, was a very busy
day as we all know it is a major commercial day anywhere in the world. Eyebrows
would not have been raised had it been the birthday celebration of the governor
was celebrated in the government house or his house.What the governor did surprised
everybody. He put an hold on all activities in the state, unbelievable.
Days before the actual celebration of the birthday, the governor had bought
immeasurable airtime to announce the birthday celebration. Another amazing thing
was the venue of the said celebration - Heroes Square, but people never
envisaged the governor would go as far as closing all activities in the state
down.
Governor Rochas on the 8th of October surprisingly announced that all
activities in the state should be put on hold and commanded everybody to move
down to the Heroes Square.
I guess by now, you really might not understand what I am talking about. The
state was shut down, economically and
socially. Now the question is this: at this time of great unrest why
will a governor afford to take such an action?
It was a traffic gridlock as he ordered
offices, schools and even markets to close and everybody to the Heroes
square.
As early as 6.o.clock,Heroes square was already filled up with civil servants,
students and market women.
The people of the state patiently waited for long hours for their governor
to arrive with his guests. They include Former president Babangida, Minister of
Zimbabwe Morgan Tsvangiri and a several other important people.
The most disturbing part of the story is that the governor did not consider
what will happen to the majority of people who rely on daily income. Did he not
think of the social and economic implication of his action?
Now, some questions bother me. The governor actually did make lots of paid
announcements. Who paid for them?
Our investigations also revealed that the minister of Zimbabwe and his aides
who were present at the celebration are actually not in good terms with the
president of Zimbabwe. This means that the Zimbabwean government might not be
responsible for the payment of his flight fares down to the country so, who
did?
